Final Song Illustration

  • Drew out final design
  • Decided on layout and exact elements to be included
  • Finalised colour scheme and placement on design
  • Text layout behind & around the illustration was also experimented with
  • Design scanned in and ready for development through illustration software

The different techniques used to colour the piece were colour pencils, chalk & collage. Colouring pencils gave the best effect and the nicest gradients, they will also provide me with near enough the final colour swatches to be used when completing the final illustration in Illustrator or Photoshop.

Illustration Research

Some trees were also photographed to help understand how their various branches grew and shaped. This would ultimately help to illustrate the final design.

I decided to incorporate various vines and flowers throughout my design to convey a sense of growth. This also allows me to show progression as at the start of my design life in the flowers will be blossoming, then fully grown in the middle and finally wilting and dying towards the end.

Design Inspiration

This is an image I found in the ‘United’ Magazine. It’s the teams main sponsor’s advertising throughout the magazine that impressed me because they keep the layout and design very simple.

The use of the bright red Manchester United shirt against a white background and the grey-scaling of each players skin tone allows the Sponsors logo on the jersey to really stand out. The positioning of each player within the image’s design also aids the logo in presenting itself as the main feature.

The way the heart is broken down in this science illustration is really interesting because although it is zoomed in the actual DNA and particles are zoomed out away from the body, which is in the background.

This gives a really nice effect and allows for each section of the illustration to be broken down and successfully annotated.

I quite like the way these flowery illustrations are used on this cocktail menu. The grainy effect in the background gives a wooden effect and the flowers appear to be stamped into it.

The use of text is also minimal and colour co-ordinated which allows it to be immediately recognisable when viewing the menu.

Illustration Design Development

I listened to my chosen track and tried to refine my final design by using the lyrics and the whole time philosophy of the song. The thought of using the hands of a clock to convey different directions in life and also add in imagery associated with different ages or events in a typical life-cycle could work quite well as a final design idea when it comes to illustrating the track.

Rubbings of leaves were incorporated into the design to show the progression of life, like the changing of the seasons. Coin rubbings were included as money is used throughout life and can be seen as a sign of independence which can be tied in with the point in life when a person leaves home.

Collage techniques were used to try and convey life's journey various elements were removed from publications using sellotape and placed on an assotate sheet to give an overall design view.

A colour progression for the design was also considered to allow for a clean flow throughout the design - colours were arranged from soft pastel colours to harder dark colours. This could also be used to convey progression through different seasons and therefore tie in with the track and life's journey.
