Idea Selection & Initial Presentation

The project I have chosen to undertake for this module is the D&AD Diesel Illustration Brief. The brief is basically to choose a band or artist and create an illustrated response inspired by two of their tracks. The target audience for the piece will be the fan base of the selected artist.

The main aim is to make illustration a pivotal part of the musical experience while offering the listeners/fans a new way to experience their favourite artists' tracks. I will also try to find a new and revolutionary use for illustrated imagery within todays music industry.

Ultimitely I want fans to desire these illustrated pieces and not just collect them as a keep sake or musical memoribilia, but actually interact with them and use them as part of their musical experience.

While researching I discovered Scottish illustrator Jenny Soep who creates drawings of events, to capture their emotion and energy. She draws on location while the events unfold around her. The images she creates are dynamic, alive and vivify the event ambience. Each event influences each drawing ensuring each image is completely unique.

During my presentation today a number of futher project developments & ideas were uncovered:
  • Cognative thinking
  • How people see things
  • How eyes read things
  • Subliminal Illustration
  • Illustration on the fly (while track plays - video)
  • Zoom in to parts of large illustration at specific, related parts of each chosen track
All the above added to my current thinking, detailed below, makes for a good start and a great deal of research to be done.

Initial Proposal

Like design, music can also be very expressive, therefore a combination of the two in illustration could work well as a promotional tool for the music as well as being a new experience for the listeners and fans.

I recently uncovered Scottish artist/illustrator Jenny Soep who makes spontaneous drawings of events, using a style that captures the emotion and energy. Jenny documents experiences by drawing on location while the events unfold around her. The images she creates are dynamic, alive and vivify the ambience whilst evoking a true sense of the event. Each event influences each drawing created at the time ensuring each image is completely unique. http://www.jennysoep.com/index.html

I also like the gorilla graffiti style of Banksy as it is not only expressive and creative but each piece also carries a message, feeling or an opinion. This is what I would like to accomplish with my song illustration - enabling the user to clearly understand the message of each track through the use of the imagery provided.

I have chosen the D&AD Student Awards 2011 - Diesel brief - which requires me to choose a band or artist and create an illustrated response inspired by two of their tracks.

The purpose of this brief is to bring back the use of promotional & expressive illustration as part of the musical experience while offering the listeners/fans a new way to experience their favourite artists' tracks.

In doing this I will demonstrate how illustration and music can successfully coincide in today’s society and hopefully find a new and revolutionary use for illustrated imagery within the music industry.

At the finish of this module I wish to have improved my time management and project planning skills. I also wish to have gained experience in successfully delivering briefs/projects within a deadline and to the desired specification.

Furthermore I wish to strengthen my design portfolio while also improving my presentation and report writing skills. Hopefully a deeper look into the design process and undertaking specific tasks throughout this module will also strengthen my creative ability and ultimately allow for professional improvement in the design field.
